BBC Films are filming a new adaptation of
the 1874 Thomas Hardy novel.
Starring Carey Mulligan as Bathsheba Everdeen,
Tom Sturridge as her husband Seargeant Troy
and Michael Sheen as the spurned Mr Boldwood.
The shops and streets surrounding the Abbey were transformed
with Victorian frontages and period props.
The grass in front of the Abbey replaced with grit,
the pavements muddied.
Old posters covered modern notices.
Shop fronts transformed.
Red telephone boxes hidden.
Brightly coloured doors replaced with drab brown ...
Look closely below ...
all the coloured window frames covered with brown tape ...
and upstairs windows shuttered ...
The charity shop window redressed and advertised as selling ...
Mantles, Costumes, Millinery & Wedding Trousseaux Dresses
The Health Food shop disguised as a Butchers ...
Yes, real heads!
Rabbits and pheasant hanging outside ...
business continued as normal inside!
And the local boutique disguised as a purveyor of hardware ...
... and haberdashery!
Carts of all shapes and sizes ...
... on every street corner
and some lovely advertising ...
It all made for a much more interesting walk during
VJ's lunchtime break from work!
Scheduled for screening Spring 2014.
VJ will be looking out for a couple of 'extras' (Miss Jones ... !) who scored parts.

We visited Corfe Castle years ago when they were filming the Mayor of Casterbridge and found it so interesting to see how they restructured the buildings and shops. I remember that they had rubber sheets of cobbles placed over the double yellow lines on the roads.

I can't wait! I watched the filming of "Agatha" in Harrogate, spotting Dustin Hoffman & others. Ken Russell's wife Shirley was in charge of the costumes & came over to admire my (then!) 5 year old's rainbow striped jumper. Very exciting!

How cool is that! It is amazing how they transformed the street to the period of the movie set. I bet it was really fun to walk down the street looking back in time.
It really looks like a setting in the 1800's!

I'm so impressed - you really got some great photos! I've just posted the ones my hubby took for the Gazette onto my blog, but I have to say yours are more colourful.
I filmed my part as the constable who informs Bathsheba that her husband has drowned at sea. It was filmed at Forde Abbey, Chard. The other scene was at Sherborne Abbey where Troy waits for Fanny to arrive for their wedding but unfortunately goes to the wrong church. I play a chorister who gives Troy a dirty look!!
